Home Studio Corner VIP Challenges

Since meeting Ben Holmes ( Benhlms Music ) in 2018 I was aware of the VIP section of Home Studio Corner, run by Joe Gilder.  I had followed Joe's YouTube channel and he was the co-founder of Duelling Mixes, where I gained valuable experience mixing tracks each month. During the production of the album Memorization I used two voaclists, Adam Rogers and Simon Carlstedt also from HSC VIP and I thought it was probably time to join and encouraged by Ben I did in March 2021.

There are two reasons I joined HSC VIP. Firstly there are some excellent musicians with whom you can collaborate and whilst I can't sing or play the keyboard very well I will be able to offer my mastering and mixing services in return.

Secondly each month there is a challlenge from Mixing, Songwriting, Cover Versions, Production to Note for Note reproduction of a song/track.

So what follows are my submissions for the challenges. Hope you like them?

Carbon Copy - Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode

This month our challenge was to make a carbon copy of a song in order to learn listening, arrangement and production skills. After the wonderful reception of our cover version of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence (see below) there was only really one choice for the song! It was a real challenge to try and copy the original. Overall I'm pleased - sure there could be many improvements but I need to move onto the next project. :-)

Production - Lies by Joe Gilder

Joe gave us two tracks form his song Lies - Acoustic Guitar and his Vocals - and the only rule was that we had to use the vocals.  I decided to do something different and as it was the 10th anniversary of discovering Above & Beyond's Group Therapy album (progressive trance) I decided to do a production in that style.  After overcoming some timing issues I was very pleased with the final result.

Almost All MIDI - Alexa, Make Me A MIDI Track!

After The success of the Depeche Mode cover I thought no orchestration on this one! Do something different. I was eventually inspired to write a Rock meets Future Bass track - random I know!  The song title is to plant some seeds for the forthcoming Season3 album Alexa! Pour Me A Gin.  Last year I mastered some tracks for Rock/Rock Rap band Deft Color and asked the lead singer Dot if he would help out - he absolutely nailed it.  I also decided to incorporate the reactions from the Depeche Cover in the breakdown.  It went down well!

Cover Version - Depeche Mode's Enjoy The Silence

My firm belief with cover versions is to do something completely different from the original.  The original was at a pop tempo so I decided to bring it right down.  Inspired by a performnce by Orla of the same song I wanted to do a longer version.  Jill sang beautifully and the reaction from Joe and the VIPers was amazing and humbling at the same time.

Mix - Family Man

Several HSC VIPers got together and wrote a track called Family Man under the group name of Disciples of Joe!  We were then given all of the tracks and the challenge was to mix it.  This was my mix and the only thing that really let it down was Joe felt the Backing Vocals were too thick - so useful lesson. Otherwise I received some very positive feedback.
